Alert to LPN Employers-Regarding LPN Registration
RE: 2012 LPN Licence
The CLPNBC wants to take a moment to remind employers that:
- LPN licences for 2011 expired at midnight on December 31, 2011; LPNs who did not renew their licence prior to this date are not eligible to practise and they are not covered by employer insurance.
- Registrants who are late in renewing their licence will be required to complete a Late Renewal Disclosure Form advising the CLPNBC on whether they have worked as an LPN after December 31, 2011.
What can employers do to ensure their LPN staff are licensed?
- Ask your staff to present their 2012 licence on their first shift of 2012; or
- Visit the CLPNBC Public Registry to search for LPN by last name (this list is updated each weeknight after January 3rd); or
- Send an Employer Verification Form to the CLPNBC to determine LPNs that are eligible to practise in 2012 (note: there is a $2 search fee per registrant name for this service);
- If you are aware of any staff practising without a 2012 licence, please contact the CLPNBC immediately at nursingconcernsinquiry@clpnbc.org.

2012 ONLINE REINSTATEMENT
2012 Online Reinstatement is now open.
The deadline to submit the 2012 renewal form and fee—without penalty—was December 31, 2011. The CLPNBC Public Registry is updated regularly to reflect all renewals that have been processed and to identify those LPNs who are eligible to practise in B.C. as of that date. Updates to the Public Registry occur every Sunday, or every business day during the peak of renewal processing (December 15 to January 15).
IF YOU DID NOT SUBMIT YOUR RENEWAL BY THE DEADLINE, OR IT WAS INCOMPLETE…
- Your 2012 Registration is now classified as "LATE", and your name has been removed from the CLPNBCs Public Registry;
- You are not eligible to practise in an LPN role until your 2012 renewal has been processed by the CLPNBC;
- You are not eligible to use any of the following titles "nurse," "LPN," "Licensed Practical Nurse," "PN," or "Practical Nurse" until your 2012 registration has been processed by the CLPNBC;
- You are not covered by liability insurance without a current licence;
- Practising in an LPN role while not registered is a breach of the Health Professions Act, the CLPNBC Bylaws, Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics, and is subject to investigation by the CLPNBC's Inquiry Committee;
- In order to obtain your license for 2012, you are required to pay the reinstatement fee and complete the Late Renewal Disclosure section of the online form. (a link for a PDF version of the form can be downloaded from "Associated documents" below);
- 2012 Reinstatements may be completed online (if eligible) or by paper. Please note that all licence renewals for 2013 will be online only.
NOTE: Completing and submitting the online form and reinstatement fee is NOT confirmation of reinstatement or registration. Processing may take up to 10 or more business days.

Generic Practical Nurse (PN) Curriculum Update
The Ministry of Advanced Education provided funding for the development of a new Practical Nurse Provincial Curriculum to the BC Academic Health Council (BCAHC) in January 2011. Under the stewardship of the BCAHC, the Project Steering Committee was charged with oversight of the curriculum development process and approval of the new curriculum. The Practical Nurse Education Project Steering Committee formally approved the new Generic Practical Nursing (PN) Curriculum in B.C. in July 2011.
The CLPNBC Board of Directors has passed a resolution that, as of January 1, 2012, the new Provincial Practical Nurse Curriculum (July 2011) will be the only curriculum recognized for Practical Nurse education in B.C. Accordingly, pursuant to the authority conferred on the CLPNBC—under the Health Professions Act, RSBC 1996, c.183, s. 19, and the College Bylaws—to recognize PN programs, the CLPNBC will only grant program recognition to those educational institutions that adhere to the Provincial PN Curriculum.
Note: The moratorium on recognition of any new educational programs (private and public) based on the OLD curriculum for practical nurses (pursuant to Schedule B of the CLPNBC Bylaws) will continue.
The College is beginning the process of formal recognition of educational programs (private and public) based on the new Generic PN Curriculum (Provincial Practical Nurse Curriculum - July 2011). Recognition of programs must be completed by June 30, 2012, after which time educational programs running under the old curriculum will cease to be recognized and program graduates will be ineligible to obtain licensure with the CLPNBC.
What does this mean for PN students in B.C.?
- Students currently enrolled in recognized PN Programs throughout B.C. will continue with their existing program. Upon graduation, they will be eligible to write the Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Exam (CPNRE).
- Some institutions will continue to offer intakes under the old Generic PN Program up until June 30, 2012. Students admitted to recognized programs up until that date will be able to complete that program and, upon graduation, be eligible to write the CPNRE.
- Prospective students looking to enter into PN studies in 2012 should contact the Institution to discuss its adoption of the new PN Curriculum, and subsequent intake dates under the new curriculum.
