Announcement - the College is going green

Over the past few months, the College has accelerated the move to being environmentally conscious. The new Executive Director, John Mayr, said "It is such an incredible waste to continue to produce the amount of paper products that this organization has in the past". He goes on to say that it is not just the paper, but the inks, energy of production, delivery, and recycling costs that matter. LPNs care about the health of their patients and I think that the College has a duty to care more for the environment in which those patients live.

The College began to transition to a combined communications strategy. The College will send postcard notices to registrants that have not provided an email address. Every effort will be made to communicate, when a registrant has provided an email address, via electronic means. Please add the College to your safe sender list to ensure that you receive important news and notices from us.

Update your records - New telephone numbers !

The College will be changing telephone number in July 2009. The new system will provide better service to callers and help control costs at the College. Please make a note of the new numbers:

Report on the 2009 Conference/AGM

Report from the 2009 AGM

With over 300 attendees, this year's Conference and AGM was the best attended to date and was not only a celebration of our accomplishments over the past year but also embodied the optimism the College feels about the future. This year's event also marked the first year that the College acknowledged selected registrants with awards of distinction.

Excitement builds early
The morning Conference Session started early - with registrants lining up before the doors had even opened - and was devoted to exhibitors, exceptional speakers, great food, and outstanding door prizes. A more subdued but equally important Business Session was held in the afternoon as was the award ceremony.

Deedee Corradini
This year's keynote speaker is the spokesperson for the female ski jumpers who wish to participate in the 2010 Olympics. Deedee Corradini is the President of Women's Ski Jumping-USA, and as the former mayor of Salt Lake City was instrumental in their Olympic bid. It was only after the Salt Lake Winter Games that Ms. Corradini learned that remarkably, ski jumping is the only activity in the Olympic Winter Games that does not allow women to compete. Ms. Corradini has taken a lead role in the much publicized quest to have the event included in the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. Ms. Corradini shared both professional and personal anecdotes with the audience making it clear that she knows more than most about "moving forward". With a close friend currently in a long-term care facility and experience with other family members who have suffered acute illnesses, she has a keen interest in health care and understands very well the critical role that practical nurses play. She paid gratitude to LPNs for their passion and commitment to providing the highest quality of care. Her combined professional and personal passions made for a timely and interesting talk. Ms. Corradini's 16 Lessons for Leadership are available here

Dr. Paul Farnan
Our second speaker of the morning was Dr. Paul Farnan. Dr. Paul Farnan is the Medical Director of HealthQuest Occupational Health Corporation where he provides medical assessments and treatment planning for healthcare providers who have complex disability issues including substance use disorders. He gave a comprehensive and fascinating talk on alcohol and chemical addiction focusing on the unique challenges faced by health care providers and nurses in particular. He covered a range of issues including the neurological affects of addiction, signs to look out for, and the various treatments and supports available. He stressed that by the time symptoms show up in the work place and the patient has been referred to him, the problem has usually progressed to a critical level. There is therefore an urgent need for earlier identification and intervention. Dr. Farnan's talk was not only extremely informative and relevant, but also very entertaining without diminishing the seriousness of the subject. Click here for part one and part two of his presentation.

John Collins
We were also fortunate to have John Collins speaking at this year's AGM. John is an RN and educator in the field of psychiatry and mental health. He is the Director of Education at Delta View and focused on the growing demand for staff with mental health and psychiatric knowledge and skills. LPNs can be instrumental in addressing the current challenges presented by the demand for healthcare professionals with knowledge and skill in this area of nursing. John talked extensively about opportunities in this field of nursing as well as educational and partnering options available to LPNs. It's never easy being the first speaker after lunch and John had a lot to cover. He woke the audience up by getting them on their feet with a session of "Daftercize", his own version of Jazzercise. The general noise and laughter generated was a good indicator or its success. The file size of John's presentation has turned out to be too large to put onto our website. Please contact the College to arrange an alternative until such time that this technical issue may be dealt with.

Business Session
It was down to the business of the College after that. Chairperson, Ms. Bernice Crockett, called the afternoon business session to order. The College had worked hard to implement one of the resolutions from last year's AGM, that being to recognize registrants. This year was the first year that the College recognized three remarkable LPNs with Awards of Distinction for their work in the areas of professional regulation and public protection. This year's recipients were Clare Hexter - Overall Winner, Jaibun Ali- Pubic Protection and Pam Tritschler - Professional Regulation. Congratulations to them all. Clare Hexter is a member of the ER team at Burnaby Hospital working mainly in Triage. She started as a Unit Clerk in 1977, became an LPN in 2005 and is a dedicated and highly skilled nurse whose critical thinking skills are clearly evidenced by her ability to work in a high stress area of one of the busiest Emergency Departments in Fraser Health. Jaibun Ali, an LPN since 1991, works in the Emergency Department of the Royal Columbian Hospital and has earned the respect and trust of all the other staff there for her skill and dedication. She was the first preceptor for Vancouver Community College in 1994 and the first preceptor at Royal Columbian Hospital. She is a strong advocate of further education. Pam Tritscher has been an LPN since 2001 and also works in the Emergency Department of the Royal Columbian Hospital. She took on preceptor-ships early on in her career and was praised for her knowledge and passion for her patients. In 2008 she went to Hope BC on her own time to help mentor 12 LPNs transition to full competencies and is continuing to advocate and support LPN/RN practice during the transition to the Fast Track/Minor Treatment Unit model. They were deserved winners and we look forward to receiving even more nominations next year.

The meeting proceeded with the usual business. Quorum was established and announced and the assembly approved the rules of order. The meeting proceeded with reports from the Chair and the Executive Director who also reported on the Audited Financial Statements. No resolutions had been received from registrants in accordance with the Bylaws. Early in the day, the Executive Director announced that late resolutions could be submitted to the registration table. This was to facilitate discussion and provide an opportunity for registrants to raise issues of concern. No late resolutions were received. There were several LPN's that asked questions or made suggestions during the Open Forum.

Acknowledgements and Thanks
The day of course would not have been complete without all the volunteers, exhibitors, sponsors, and door prize contributors who participated this year. They certainly help make the day such a success. The feedback from everyone was overwhelmingly positive. Other highlights include: Douglas College's new LPN Mental Health Nursing Certificate Program. Registration will be continuous and will now allow LPNs to maintain their work schedules while enrolled. Eminata Group held a draw for a $1000 nursing bursary. Many great door prizes.

LPNs & RNs - Working Together for Client Safety

Over the past year, the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of BC and the College of Registered Nurses of BC have held several joint web conferences entitled "Practice Expectations." These were so well received that now, instead of the web conferences, CLPNBC and CRNBC have worked together to develop a comprehensive web resource entitled "RNs and LPNs - Working Together for Client Safety". This means the information previously shared during the web conferences is now accessible online, at any time.
