Annual General Meeting

The 2010 CLPNBC Conference & AGM was held on Thursday, June 10th at The Italian Cultural Centre in East Vancouver.

This year's Conference and AGM marked some notable firsts for the College and a few lasts. For the first time, this year's event was held at the Italian Cultural Centre in East Vancouver, with 360 attendees. It was also the last AGM for a long standing and dedicated Board Member and the current Chair, Bernice Crockett, who has come to the end of her final term on the Board. The theme of the meeting was "LPNs Leading Change" and it could not have been more apt. The profession has seen many positive changes and challenges this past year and we look forward to more interesting times ahead.

This year's event was a resounding success and the College would like to express deep gratitude to its sponsors, exhibitors, door-prize contributors, speakers, staff and all the registrants and students whose attendance, contributions, time and patience make it all happen.

This year's line-up of Speakers was exceptional and for the first time included a number of LPNs, and others, who are leading the way forward.

Sponsors are an essential part of our AGM and Conference, helping us to make it possible and contributing in no small part to its success!

We are also fortunate to receive support from organizations who participate each year as Exhibitors; showcasing their services, products and educational opportunities, and Prize contributors who always give generously. Registrants always look forward to this part of the Conference.

Please view this year's , Award of Distinction recipients, sponsor's,exibitors and door prize contributors below. More AGM news and photos can also be found on the "home" page.

  2010 Awards of Distinction Recipients

Ms. Bernice Crockett, Chair began the afternoon session at the 2010 AGM with the presentation of Awards of Distinction to four very deserving LPNs who had been nominated by their peers.

The Awards are granted to one or more registrants who exemplify the principles of professional regulation and public protection by demonstrating a commitment to maintaining or enhancing one or more of the following:

• high practice standards
• professional ethics
• quality of practice

Award winners for 2010:

Marion Anderson, LPN
Marion has been at Surrey Memorial Hospital since 1992. She is passionate about her patients and is highly regarded by her peers and colleagues. Marion began advocating for LPNs in 1985 when she became a council member on the newly formed Council of LPNS (The Licensing Body for LPNs in BC at that time) and has sat on various committees and worked on the development of the Scope of Practice that is still in use today. She was the Vice Chair of the LPN Association of British Columbia for many years and as an instructor for a local Practical Nursing program she models strong leadership, mentorship and preceptorship qualities.

JoAnn Corkum, LPN
JoAnn has been on the surgical floor at Richmond Hospital for 37 years and is a dedicated LPN, highly respected by all her colleagues. She has sat on many committees including the Professional Practice Committee and has taken a leadership role as a preceptor for many students. In 2008, as part of the province's 150th anniversary celebrations, Joann received a recognition award as one of BC's 150 Outstanding Nurses. Joann recognizes the value of her colleagues and advocates for them. She has always been accountable for her own practice and by example teaches others integrity and accountability.

Lori Mauricio, LPN
Lori has been an LPN for 20 years and has worked in every department at Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster and currently works in the Emergency Departments. Lori is a committed, competent nurse, renowned for her dedication and for maintaining a very high standard of care. In 2007 Lori co-chaired a newly established LPN Professional Practice Council at Royal Columbian; she has been on the Emergency Department Streaming Committee since its inception in 2008 and has sat on interview panels and mentored and nurtured countless LPNs and Care Aides. She currently sits on the panel for the Outstanding Nurse Award for Nurses Week at Royal Columbian Hospital.

Rebbecca Teves, LPN
Becky qualified as an LPN in 2006 and currently works at Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria. She is currently the Musculoskeletal Injury Prevention coach on the short stay and general medicine unit. Becky is the kind of nurse who goes the extra distance and goes out of her way to provide continuity of care to her patients. Since becoming the MSIP coach she has consistently modeled safe work practices, established systems to support the full use of patient handling equipment and acted as a resource for staff with problems or concerns regarding safe patient handling. Becky also preceptors practical nursing students at the end of their programs.
